Some names describe cells under the microscope, while others describe the site or setting in which melanoma occurs. These categories are not always mutually exclusive: a melanoma can have several features at once.<\/p>\n<p>This distinction prevents a word in a pathology report from being treated as an automatic prediction of prognosis. A complete diagnosis, site of origin, invasion and disease extent remain essential. Variants documented in few cases have a more limited evidence base than better-studied forms.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"im26-dg-section\" id=\"rf-istologia\">\n<h2>Variants defined by microscopic appearance<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilmelanoma.com\/en\/melanoma\/rare-variants-of-melanoma\/nevoid-melanoma\/\">Nevoid melanoma<\/a> can resemble a benign mole, including within tissue. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilmelanoma.com\/en\/melanoma\/rare-variants-of-melanoma\/small-cell-melanoma\/\">Small cell melanoma<\/a> describes a morphology that can overlap with the nevoid pattern. These names do not automatically mean that a tumour arose from a pre-existing mole.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilmelanoma.com\/en\/melanoma\/rare-variants-of-melanoma\/signet-ring-melanoma\/\">Signet ring cell melanoma<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilmelanoma.com\/en\/melanoma\/rare-variants-of-melanoma\/rhabdoid-melanoma\/\">rhabdoid melanoma<\/a> are named after cellular appearances. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilmelanoma.com\/en\/melanoma\/rare-variants-of-melanoma\/myxoid-melanoma\/\">Myxoid melanoma<\/a> has a distinctive extracellular matrix. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilmelanoma.com\/en\/melanoma\/rare-variants-of-melanoma\/osteogenic-melanoma\/\">Osteogenic melanoma<\/a> may produce osteoid or show osteocartilaginous differentiation. These are pathology topics, not forms that can be reliably identified by looking at the skin.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"im26-dg-section\" id=\"rf-contesti\">\n<h2>Origin, site and age at onset<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilmelanoma.com\/en\/melanoma\/rare-variants-of-melanoma\/melanoma-on-blue-nevus\/\">Melanoma arising in a blue nevus<\/a> concerns association with a particular melanocytic lesion; the common blue nevus is benign and transformation is rare. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilmelanoma.com\/en\/melanoma\/rare-variants-of-melanoma\/congenital-or-infantile-melanoma\/\">Congenital or infantile melanoma<\/a> concerns age at presentation and includes different situations requiring specialist paediatric assessment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilmelanoma.com\/en\/melanoma\/rare-variants-of-melanoma\/primary-melanoma-of-the-mucous-membranes\/\">Primary mucosal melanoma<\/a> is grouped here because it is rare, but is defined mainly by its site. It is also linked from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilmelanoma.com\/en\/melanoma\/tipi-particolari-di-melanoma\/\">special types of melanoma<\/a> alongside the eye and nervous system pathways. Each page links back to its index and to relevant further reading without requiring a return to the home page.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"im26-dg-section\" id=\"rf-referto\">\n<h2>From pathology report to clinical decision<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilmelanoma.com\/en\/melanoma\/istopatologia-del-melanoma\/\">Histological examination<\/a> and immunohistochemistry help distinguish these variants from other tumours. Difficult cases may benefit from slide review at an expert centre or molecular investigations. A positive or negative marker, separated from the other findings, cannot establish diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Care is selected according to site, stage, surgical options and biological features, considering the available evidence. Rarity alone does not prove that treatment is ineffective or justify generalising from one case.
