Pigments can obscure colour and borders and complicate comparison with earlier photographs. Before tattooing, avoid moles and keep enough surrounding skin visible for monitoring. Have any uncertain lesion assessed before the session.

Reports of melanoma inside tattoos do not by themselves prove that ink caused the tumour. Historical case reports on this page primarily documented diagnostic difficulties. Tattooing and cancer risk remain research topics; neither general proven causation nor complete absence of risk should be asserted.

People with tattoos should continue checking their skin and report growth, spontaneous bleeding or persistent changes. A pink or unpigmented lesion may matter as much as a dark one. Do not wait for a tattoo to fade before seeking assessment.

Sources: NCI — Common moles, dysplastic nevi and melanoma; ECHA — Tattoo inks and permanent make-up.

Laser, lymph nodes and ink regulation

Before laser tattoo removal, the clinician should identify melanocytic lesions within the area. Destroying pigment in a suspicious lesion can prevent or delay an adequate histological diagnosis. Recognising this diagnostic risk does not require claiming that laser certainly transforms a mole into melanoma. When indicated, biopsy precedes cosmetic treatment.

Tattoo pigment can reach lymph nodes and complicate interpretation during investigations or surgery. Tell the team where tattoos are located and whether any were removed. Histology can distinguish pigment from tumour cells when necessary.

Since January 2022, EU REACH restrictions have applied to many substances in tattoo inks and permanent make-up, with transitional provisions for certain pigments. Their purpose is to reduce hazardous exposure, not certify that every tattoo is risk-free. Ask about the product and hygiene arrangements, without treating ink compliance as a substitute for dermatological assessment.

During cancer treatment or near recent scars, discuss tattoo timing and suitability with the team first. Infection risk, healing and immune status may affect the decision. Individual advice from the centre takes precedence over generic online suggestions.

Sources: ECHA — Tattoo inks and permanent make-up; NCI — Common moles, dysplastic nevi and melanoma.

Continue the pathway

Melanoma: ten myths to challenge

Ten common beliefs, corrected with explanations and practical actions.

After melanoma: follow-up and everyday life

A personalised plan for surveillance, symptoms, recovery and support after diagnosis.

Editorial review and source consultation: 17 October 2026.
