Choose a book for its purpose
A book can provide a coherent explanation, but rapid oncology developments make edition checking essential. A useful pathology or history text may be outdated on immunotherapy, targeted treatments or social rights. Before purchasing, verify title, authors, publisher, year and contents in the publisher’s or a library’s catalogue.
Patients and families may find accessible resources such as AIMaC booklets and NCI information a better starting point. For professionals, dermoscopy atlases, pathology texts and oncology reference works serve different purposes. An atlas cannot diagnose a lesion from a home photograph alone.
As an example of an edition newer than the original collection, Springer documents Cutaneous Melanoma, sixth edition, 2020, ISBN 978-3-030-05068-9. It is a professional reference work, not a treatment guide automatically updated to 2026. Clinical decisions require current guidelines and regulatory information alongside it.

How to read the retained historical catalogue
The original collection is retained below, including dermoscopy, surgery, pathology, paediatrics, uveal melanoma, genetics, medico-legal works and personal accounts. Historically listed titles, attributions and years do not certify current commercial availability or the latest edition. Some original citations are incomplete or contain typographical errors: compare them with a bibliographic catalogue before ordering rather than relying only on a cover image.
Dated descriptions referring to “latest therapies” meant the time of publication. For example, the 2009 Balch reference covered epidemiology, prevention, genetics, biopsy, childhood, pregnancy and localised, regional and metastatic disease, including cases and prognostic data. This documents its historical breadth, not the current validity of every algorithm. Later editions and guidelines have changed several of these areas.
