Apps and melanoma: usefulness, limitations and privacy

Diaries and reminders may help; an automated result cannot rule out melanoma.

Distinguish diaries, telemedicine and automated diagnosis

An app may remind you about appointments, store photographs or help prepare questions. These organisational functions differ from medical assessment. Remote consultation with an identifiable professional also differs from an algorithm classifying a photograph.

A “low risk” result must not delay assessment of a growing, changing or bleeding lesion. Image quality, body site, skin tone and lesion type can affect performance. False negatives may provide inappropriate reassurance, while false positives may cause anxiety and unnecessary visits. Do not use an app to cancel a recommended appointment.

For products claiming a diagnostic purpose, check intended use, manufacturer, relevant regulatory documentation and limitations. CE marking does not mean infallibility or replacement of a dermatologist. Store reviews and download counts are not clinical studies.

Before installation or uploading photographs

Check where images are stored, who can access them, how long they are retained and how to delete or export them. A photograph showing a face, tattoo or other distinctive feature may identify someone; lesion images can disclose health information. Review subscription charges and any use of data for research or algorithm training.

A secure system agreed with the dermatologist may be sufficient for a simple diary. Keep lighting, distance and a size reference consistent without altering colours or contrast. Avoid sending intimate photographs to unverified services. Children’s consent and data handling require particular care.

The historical list contained twenty apps and old prices. All twenty original Apple URLs returned 404 during the 17 October 2026 check. This does not prove that no product has moved or changed name, but means they cannot be presented as currently verified downloads. Their names and context remain in the archive without obsolete prices or purchase buttons.
