Useful melanoma links: information, support and research

A selection by purpose, with audience, language and limitations.

Start with the question, not the number of websites

Understanding a pathology report requires clinical explanations; requesting employment leave requires legislation and procedures; considering a trial requires a registry and participating centre. Combining these needs in one alphabetical list makes navigation difficult. The resources below serve different purposes and help identify the next useful step.

Foreign organisations do not automatically describe Italian healthcare. Even reliable associations may offer services restricted to residents of a particular country. Confirm eligibility and contacts directly before sending medical documents. Inclusion here does not imply a commercial agreement, partnership or personalised medical assessment.

Calculators, forums and images: important limits

A risk calculator estimates probabilities in the populations for which it was developed; it cannot decide whether a spot is melanoma. A prognostic calculator cannot replace current staging and clinical assessment. Historical risk and prognosis tools that can no longer be verified are not re-presented as usable tests.

Forums and personal accounts may reduce isolation, but experiences depend on stage, timing and treatment. A good outcome does not prove a product effective, and a difficult story does not predict your future. Avoid uploading identifiable photographs or complete reports to public spaces.

Dermoscopy atlases and professional societies support clinical training. Comparing a home photograph with an atlas image cannot establish diagnosis. Self-examination helps identify change and prompt consultation, rather than assign a histological diagnosis.

Using news and databases

PubMed helps locate publications but does not make every paper equally reliable. Read study design, sample size, comparator and clinical outcomes rather than only the title. A conference abstract may announce findings not yet fully published. A review may combine heterogeneous studies and have a literature search date earlier than publication.

In trial registries, check country, site, recruitment status, eligibility and study contact. “Ongoing” does not mean “open to new participants”, and registry information may lag behind a centre’s change. Bringing the study identifier and questions to your oncologist is more useful than requesting an experimental drug without assessment.

The historical directory included commercial sun-protective clothing websites, personal blogs and unavailable portals. The current selection prioritises identifiable organisations and separates information, support and training. Historical names are retained in the editorial archive without directing readers to domains that may have changed owner or content.
