Seven point checklist score (Argenziano)

Argenziano’s checklist assesses dermoscopic images and requires professional interpretation. It is not the ABCDE rule or a self-examination test.

Published: 16/10/2026

Its purpose

The algorithm organises suspicious dermoscopic features in melanocytic lesions. It is used within clinical assessment; a score alone cannot confirm or exclude melanoma.

The seven classic criteria

  • Atypical pigment network — 2 points.
  • Blue-whitish veil — 2 points.
  • Atypical vascular pattern — 2 points.
  • Irregular streaks — 1 point.
  • Irregular dots or globules — 1 point.
  • Irregular blotches — 1 point.
  • Regression structures — 1 point.

Scores and versions

The classic version uses a suspicion threshold of 3 points. Revised versions use different weightings; criteria and thresholds should not be mixed. Clinical interpretation and decisions about further investigation remain the professional’s responsibility.

For people checking their own skin

Do not calculate a score from phone photographs. Use the ABCDE guide as a reminder when checking your skin and report concerning changes or lesions to a doctor.
